I want to start with a moment that happens in a lot of houses and almost never gets talked about.
Somebody is sitting at a table with a person they owe. And that person says something that is not true. Not a lie exactly, just wrong, and everybody in the room knows it is wrong. And the person who owes them opens their mouth, and then closes it, and picks up their fork.
Nothing happened. That is the whole event. A man had a true sentence and he ate instead.
There is a line in Proverbs about that and it is one of the flattest, most unemotional sentences in the Bible. It does not scold anybody. It does not tell you not to borrow. It just states a mechanism the way you would state that water runs downhill.
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
Servant. Not friend with a payment plan. Servant. And nobody signs that part, because that part is not on the paper.
It is a description, not a rebuke
Read it, and notice the total absence of shame in it.
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. (Proverbs 22:7, King James Version)
There is no command in that verse. There is no thou shalt not. Solomon does not say borrowing is sin, and he does not say a person in debt has failed God, and he does not offer one word of blame to anybody.
He is doing what Proverbs does, which is naming how something works so that nobody gets caught by surprise.
That matters, because the shame around this subject is thick and most of it is not from Scripture. A person can be in debt from a hospital, from a car that died, from a year they did not choose, and none of that is a moral event. The verse does not care how it happened. It only tells you what it does.
You are not being accused here, and God has never once measured you by a balance. That is not me softening a hard verse. Proverbs 22:7 is a description with no command in it, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person look straight at a fact about their life without hearing condemnation underneath it.
What it actually costs is your voice
Now the part that matters most, and it is not about money at all.
Servant is a relationship word. It describes who can say what to whom. And the practical way owing works itself out is almost never a demand from the lender. It is a quiet, automatic self editing in the borrower.
You do not disagree with them the way you used to. You laugh a beat longer at something that was not funny. You do not bring up the thing that needs bringing up, because this is not the time, and it is never the time.
Nobody is holding anything over anybody. The lender may be lovely. That is what makes it so hard to name, because there is no villain in the room to point at.
You have been paying in a currency nobody itemized, and He has never once asked you to spend it. The word says the borrower is servant to the lender and puts it in terms of who rules whom, and the Spirit of God is the one who shows a person what a relationship has actually been costing them.
Every dependency creates a loyalty
Here is the wider law under that verse, and it is the thesis of everything I write.
Whatever a person leans on, they end up loyal to. Not because they are weak. Because that is how human beings are built, and it works the same whether the thing leaned on is a person, a job, a system, a family, or a church.
And loyalty is not a feeling. It is measurable. You can find it by asking one question: what can I not say, and who can I not say it to.
Whatever comes up when you ask that honestly, that is where your loyalty actually runs. Not where you say it runs. Where the silence is.
I need to be plain that this is a spiritual claim and not a political one. I am not talking about any program, any party, or any argument you have heard on television. I am talking about a mechanism in the human heart that shows up in a marriage, in a family, in a workplace, and in a church, and it works exactly the same in all four.
You are able to trace this in yourself, and the tracing has never once required you to accuse anybody. Proverbs 22:7 describes a mechanism rather than a person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person their own heart in a way that heals instead of shames.
The way out is not always the money
Here is what took me longest to understand, and it is the practical part.
A person hears this and assumes the answer is to pay everything off, and sometimes that is right and often it takes years and sometimes it is not possible at all. So if the only way to get your voice back is a zero balance, most people are stuck.
It is not the only way. The thing that closed your mouth was not the number, it was the fear of what happens if the arrangement ends. And that fear can be answered before the number is.
Ask yourself what would actually happen if you said the true thing and they were angry. Sometimes the honest answer is genuinely serious. Often it is that a relationship gets uncomfortable for a while.
And there is a step before either one, which is saying the sentence out loud by yourself first, so it exists somewhere outside your chest.
You have a voice that was given to you, and no arrangement has ever once taken ownership of it. Scripture calls it servant and not property, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person the nerve to open their mouth in a room where they have been careful for years.
So here is what I believe God is putting in front of somebody right now.
You are not owned, and no amount on any statement has ever once purchased your voice. I am not being casual about a real bind. Proverbs 22:7 says servant plainly and I am not going to pretend it says something softer, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my encouragement who gets that distinction into a person who has been quiet at a table for years.
Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. That verb has been my whole message on this site and here is what it means today: the power in your hands is not on loan from anybody in your life. It came from Him. Nobody at any table gave it to you and nobody at any table can take it back.
You have a Father, and the thing you owe has never once been your father. Scripture puts the mechanism in the open so it can be seen, and the Spirit of God is the one who unhooks a person's loyalty from their lender and hands it back to the One who owns it.
Declare this over yourself
- Silence I bought with what I owe, you are not peace and you are leaving. Proverbs 22:7 says servant and it never once says property, so get off my mouth in the name of Jesus.
- Fear of what happens if I speak, you have no vote at that table. The word describes a mechanism and not a sentence over me, and by the Holy Spirit I am saying the true thing out loud today.
- Father, You gave me the power to get and no lender in my life handed me one bit of it. Your word says the borrower is servant to the lender, so I put my loyalty back where it belongs and I speak as Your son.
