DependencyMark 10:21

One Thing He Would Not Put on the Table

This message is for the reader who has surrendered everything to God except one thing they have never named out loud

A man came running up to Jesus in the road, and he did not walk. He ran, and then he knelt in the dirt in front of everybody.

That is not a skeptic. That is not a man setting a trap. Everything about how he arrives says he means it. He asks the best question anybody asks in that entire Gospel: good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

And Jesus starts listing commandments, and the man says he has kept them, from his youth. And I do not think he was lying. I think he was a genuinely good man who had done genuinely good things and who had come running down a road because something was still missing and he knew it.

Then comes the sentence that I cannot read fast.

Then Jesus beholding him loved him.

Before the hard part. Before the instruction. Before anything gets asked of him at all, Mark stops the story and tells you what was on Jesus' face. He looked at him and He loved him.

And then He said the hardest thing anybody said to anybody in that book.

One thing thou lackest.

The love came before the requirement

Read the order, because the order is the mercy.

Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. (Mark 10:21, King James Version)

Loved him, and said unto him.

The love is not the reward for compliance. It is the setting the requirement is spoken in. And the man walks away a few seconds later, and the text never once says the love stopped.

That matters more than almost anything else in this passage, because the thing being asked of him was enormous and he did not do it, and Scripture does not follow him down the road with a rebuke. It says he went away grieved, for he had great possessions, and that is the last we ever hear.

You are looked at with love before anything is asked of you, and He has never once required a thing in order to start caring. That is not me making the passage easier. Mark 10:21 puts the loving before the asking in the same sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that order real in a person rather than merely known.

One thing is a diagnosis, not a price

Notice that Jesus does not say ten things. He says one.

And He does not say the same one to everybody. He never told Peter to sell his boat. He never told Zacchaeus what to give, and Zacchaeus decided on half. He never told Nicodemus to liquidate anything.

So this is not a rule about money that applies to every reader. It is a diagnosis of one man, and the diagnosis is precise: everything else in this man's life was already available to God, and one thing was not, and the one thing that is not available is always the one thing running the person.

That is why the instruction sounds so severe. It is not a fee. It is a doctor pointing at the one place that hurts.

You have one thing, and God has never once needed a list from you. The word has Jesus name a single item and never generalize it into a policy, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a person which item is theirs, quietly, without a crowd hearing it.

Whatever cannot go on the table is holding the person

Here is the mechanism, and it is the same one this whole site keeps naming.

Whatever a person leans on, they are loyal to. And the fastest way to find that is not to ask what somebody loves, because most people answer that question wrong. It is to ask what could not go on the table.

Not what you would find hard. What you could not even say out loud as a possibility.

For that man it was possessions. For somebody else it is a relationship, or a career, or a version of their future, or a reputation, or an ability, or a plan they have had since they were nineteen. The item is never the point. The un-offerability is the point.

I have to say this plainly: mine was the music. For a long stretch I would have told you God had everything, and He did not, because the one thing I never once offered Him was the thing I had asked Him for. That is a strange sentence and it is true.

You are able to name yours, and He has never once been shocked by what it turned out to be. Mark 10:21 has a specific item named for a specific man with no scolding attached, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings the right thing to a person's mind and keeps it kind.

He went away sad and Jesus let him

The end of this passage is one of the strangest things in the Gospels and I think it is one of the most respectful.

He goes away grieved. And Jesus lets him go.

No chase. No adjusted offer. No lowering the number to keep him. He watches a man He loves walk down a road and He does not manipulate him back, and then He turns to His disciples and says something about how hard this is for people, and the disciples are astonished.

And then Peter, being Peter, says: we have left all and followed thee. And Jesus does not correct him or flatter him. He tells him plainly that nobody who has left anything for His sake fails to receive a hundredfold now in this time, with persecutions, and in the world to come eternal life. He puts the persecutions right in the middle of the promise. He does not sell anything.

You are not going to be manipulated into this, and He has never once needed to trick a person into surrender. Mark 10:22 has Jesus let a grieving man walk away, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the slow honest work in somebody instead of the fast one.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody right now.

You are loved before this, and nothing you say or fail to say today has ever once changed that. I am not making the ask smaller. Mark 10:21 asked a man for everything he had, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my framing who keeps a sentence like that from crushing somebody who is genuinely afraid.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Here is why that matters in this exact passage. If the strength to get is His and not mine, then the thing I built with it was never my security in the first place, and putting it on the table is not risking my supply. It is admitting where my supply always was.

That is the whole difference between surrender and loss.

You have one thing, and it has never once been too big to say out loud. Mark 10:21 names one item and stops there, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a person the nerve to say theirs, tonight, in a kitchen, with nobody listening.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Thing I keep off the table, you are not my security and I am naming you. Mark 10:21 has Jesus name one thing and one thing only, so you lose your grip in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that says offering it means losing it, you have no standing here. The word says Jesus beholding him loved him before He asked for anything, and by the Holy Spirit I am saying my one thing out loud.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and everything I built came out of Your strength. Your word puts treasure in heaven and following in the same breath, so I put the last thing on the table and I follow You with it there.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
