A Hundred and Twenty Years of Building With No Rain in Sight

There was a man building a boat in a place with no water.

Not near a river. Not near a coast. On dry ground, in a dry country, under a sky that had never once done the thing he said it was going to do. The Bible tells us that in that world it had not even rained the way we know rain; the ground came up with mist. So he was building a vessel for a kind of weather nobody in the history of the planet had ever seen.

And he did it for a very long time. Long enough that people grew up, got married, had children, and died while that thing sat in his yard.

Think about what that looked like from the road. Every single day, for decades, that man went out and worked on a boat, and every single day the sky stayed exactly the way it had always been. There was never one piece of evidence. Not one drop, not one cloud, not one afternoon where somebody said, huh, maybe.

And the whole record of what he did with all those years is one sentence.

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

One sentence for a hundred and twenty years

Here is the whole summary of the longest construction project in Scripture.

That is it. No feelings. No progress report. No description of a single hard afternoon, and there had to have been thousands of them.

I love this and I hate it at the same time. I hate it because I want to know what it was like. I want to know what he told his wife in year forty. I want to know if he ever stood out there and looked at that hull and thought, what if I heard this wrong.

And I love it because of what it tells you God kept. Out of all of those years, He kept the obedience. He did not keep the applause, because there was not any. He did not keep the results, because there were not any yet. He kept: he did it.

You are being watched by the only One whose record matters, and He is keeping the part nobody else can see. That is not a nice thought to get you through a Tuesday. It is what Genesis 6 actually preserves out of a whole lifetime, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a fact like that and makes it hold weight in an ordinary person's chest.

What a long obedience does to a person

I want to be honest about what that kind of stretch costs, because a lot of preaching skips it.

Building something with no evidence does not feel like faith while a person is inside it. It feels like being wrong in public. It feels like the slow, grinding suspicion that everybody else has already figured out something the builder has not admitted yet.

I know a version of that. When I started, I was bad. Genuinely, objectively bad, for a long time, and there was no way to hide it because the whole point of the thing is that people hear it. I wrote in a truck cab on breaks and I filled notebooks with lines that were not good, and my own family thought I had lost the plot, and they were not being cruel. From where they stood it looked like a grown man playing.

That is what a hull in a dry yard looks like from the road.

You are not behind schedule, and there was never a schedule you were handed to be behind on. Genesis 6:22 measures the man by what he did and not by how long it took, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the clock out of a person's hand.

You have not misheard Him, and the emptiness of that yard is not the verdict on your obedience. Scripture wrote down one sentence about a man and it was about what he did, not about what anybody thought of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person on year six of something.

He was not building it alone and he was not building it fast

Two things in that story that get skipped, and both of them matter for somebody reading this.

First, the sons. He had help. Shem, Ham and Japheth are in that yard, and their wives are in that story, and whatever else that ark was, it was a family operation. Nobody in Scripture builds a big thing by themselves.

Second, he had never done it before. There was no boat to copy. No plan from another builder. He got dimensions from God and then he had to figure out how to actually make wood do that, and I promise you the first section was worse than the last section. That is how building works. He was bad at it first, the way everybody is bad at it first, and the ark that floated was built by hands that had already made a hundred mistakes.

You are allowed to be learning it while you build it, and the early bad work is not disqualifying. The word says God commanded and the man did, and it never once says the man did it perfectly on the first attempt, and the Holy Spirit is with a person through the ugly part exactly the same way He is there for the finished part.
