I Will Not Take a Thread, Lest Thou Shouldest Say

This message is for the reader who cannot see why accepting a certain offer would cost them anything at all

Abram had just won a war he never wanted to be in.

His nephew had been taken in a raid, and Abram went after them with three hundred and eighteen men from his own household and got everybody back. All the people. All the goods. A complete recovery, and by every custom of that world, the spoils belonged to the man who won them.

So the king of the city he had just rescued came out to meet him with an offer that was, by any standard, generous and completely fair. He said: give me the people, and take the goods for yourself.

That is not a trick. That is a man who has just been saved offering the man who saved him everything of value. There is no fine print. Nobody in that valley would have thought twice about Abram loading up.

And Abram said no. Not a modest no. He raised his hand and swore to God most high and said he would not take a thread or a shoelace of it.

And then he said why, and the reason is one sentence long, and it is the whole point of this message.

Lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich.

He was not refusing the goods

Read the reason, because it is not about money at all.

That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich. (Genesis 14:23, King James Version)

Lest thou shouldest say.

He is not worried about the goods being tainted. He is not making a point about simple living. He is thinking about a sentence that would exist afterward, in somebody else's mouth, for the rest of his life.

God had already promised to make him great. That promise was the entire architecture of his life. And if he took that king's goods, then from that day forward there would be a man in the world who could say he had made Abram what he was, and that sentence would sit next to God's promise forever, and Abram would never be able to remove it.

You are able to see past the object to the sentence, and God has never once asked you to be naive about an offer. That is not suspicion I am recommending. Genesis 14:23 has Abram name the future sentence out loud as his whole reason, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives a person that kind of foresight in a room where everybody else is celebrating.

Not every offer is that offer

I have to guard this immediately, because a message like this can turn a person into somebody who cannot receive anything, and that is its own sickness.

In the same chapter, a few verses earlier, another king comes out to Abram with bread and wine and blesses him, and Abram receives it and gives him a tenth of everything. He takes that one. Gladly.

Two offers, same afternoon, same man. He takes one and refuses the other, and he is not being inconsistent.

So the question is never whether an offer is free. Both of those were free. The question is what accepting it would put you inside of. One was fellowship and blessing. The other would have installed a permanent claim on his story.

And a person cannot answer that question with a rule. They have to actually look.

You are allowed to receive, and refusing everything has never once been the same as being free. Genesis 14:18 has Abram accept bread and wine from one king four verses before he refuses everything from another, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives the discernment to tell two offers apart.

The offer that costs a story

Here is the thing I want to name, because I have watched it happen and I have felt it myself.

Sometimes an offer is genuinely free of money and genuinely expensive in another currency. Take it, and a certain sentence about you becomes available to somebody. And nobody has to say the sentence for it to work. It just exists, and both people know it exists, and it changes how a room feels for years.

That is what Abram was protecting. Not his wealth. His story, and specifically whose name was on it.

And I have to be careful and fair here. Refusing help is not automatically noble. There are people who refuse everything out of pride and call it principle, and there are people who refuse a hand they genuinely need because accepting it would mean admitting something about their situation. That is not Abram. That is fear with a good verse over it.

Abram did not refuse because he could not stand to receive. He had just received bread and wine an hour earlier. He refused because of one specific sentence that one specific man would have been able to say.

You have the right to ask what an offer will let somebody say, and that has never once been ungrateful. The written word records Abram's exact reasoning without one word of criticism, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates wisdom from pride inside a person's own motives.

Whose name ends up on it

This is the whole thesis of everything I write and this passage is where it sits cleanest.

Every dependency creates a loyalty. Take a thing, and something in you turns toward the hand it came from. Not always. Not fatally. But something.

And what Abram is defending is not his independence. He is not a self made man and he would have been offended by the phrase. He is defending God's claim on his life, because he had a promise from God about becoming great and he was not going to let a second name get written next to it.

That is a different motive than pride entirely. Pride says nobody made me. Abram says God made me, and I am not letting anybody else claim it.

You have a Father whose name is on your life, and no offer has ever once been able to overwrite it. Genesis 14:22 has Abram lift his hand to the Lord, the possessor of heaven and earth, before he says a word about the goods, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person's loyalty settled when something generous is being held out.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are free to look at an offer honestly, and gratitude has never once required you to stop thinking. I am not making anybody suspicious of kindness. Genesis 14 has Abram receive one gift and refuse another in the same hour, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a rule of thumb who makes that discernment work in a real situation.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Read Abram's refusal against that and it lines up perfectly. He was not turning down provision. He had a source, and the source was God, and he knew the strength to go get three hundred and eighteen men and win a war had come from somewhere, and he was not going to let a king in a valley put his name on the outcome.

You have a source, and no hand in your life has ever once been it. Genesis 14:22 calls God the possessor of heaven and earth right before the refusal, and the Spirit of God is the one who settles a person about where their supply actually comes from.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Offer with a story attached, you are not a gift and I see the price on you. Genesis 14:23 says lest thou shouldest say I have made Abram rich, so you do not get my name in the name of Jesus.
  2. Pride that refuses every hand, you have no place in me either. The word has Abram take bread and wine four verses before he refuses a fortune, and by the Holy Spirit I am asking for real discernment today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You are the possessor of heaven and earth. Your word has a man lift his hand to You before he answers a king, so I lift mine and I let You be the only name on my life.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
