DiligenceProverbs 22:29

A Man Diligent in His Business and Who Gets to See It

This message is for the reader who believes doors only open by luck or by knowing somebody, never by the quality of the work

Solomon asks a question in the middle of a chapter and then answers it in one line.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

Now the word translated diligent there is not mainly about effort. It carries the sense of skilled, quick, practiced, expert. It is a word about a person who is genuinely good at the thing, not just busy at it, and that distinction is the whole verse.

And what he says happens is that the work puts the man in a different room.

I want to be careful with this immediately, because a verse like that can be turned into a promise and it is not one. Proverbs is a book of observations. It tells you the way things generally run, and Solomon himself wrote a whole other book about the exceptions.

But here is what it is not. It is not a description of a world where nothing matters except luck, and where the quality of what a person makes has no bearing on anything. That world is the one a lot of us were handed, and it is not the one this verse describes.

The word is about skill

Read it, and then hear which word is carrying the weight.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men. (Proverbs 22:29, King James Version)

Diligent in his business. Skilled at his trade. Not hardworking in general. Good at this specific thing.

That matters because the two are not the same and a lot of people are the first without ever becoming the second. A person can be exhausted every day for a decade and never get better at anything, because effort and skill are different currencies and only one of them compounds.

Skill is what happens when effort is aimed at improving rather than just at finishing. That is a different way to spend the same hour.

You are able to get better and not only busier, and God has never once measured a person by how tired they were. That is not me discounting hard work. Proverbs 22:29 uses a word about skill and not about hours, and it is the Holy Spirit who shows a person where their effort is going and whether anything is compounding.

What this verse is not saying

I have to fence this, because I know exactly how this gets preached and I am not going to do it.

It does not say get good and God will promote you. It does not promise a room, a platform, or a check. It does not say anything at all about what a person deserves.

There are excellent people who never stood before anybody. There are unjust rooms. Proverbs describes the ordinary shape of things and Ecclesiastes describes the exceptions, and both of them are in the Bible on purpose so nobody builds a theology on half of it.

What it does say is that skill is not nothing. It is a real force in the world, and it opens doors that effort alone does not, and that is worth knowing if a person has been told their whole life that the only doors are the ones somebody opens for you.

You are not promised a room, and the work has never once been pointless because of that. Proverbs 22:29 is an observation rather than a contract, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person working well without hanging their hope on an outcome.

Where I heard the opposite

I want to name where the other belief comes from, because it did not come from nowhere and the people who taught it to me were not fools.

In the city I am from, a lot of people did excellent work for a long time and the work went away anyway. Not because they were not good. Because a plant closed, and skill did not save a single one of them.

So a belief grew up: it does not matter how good a man gets. And that belief is a scar, and it is honest, and it came from something that actually happened to real people.

Here is the thing I have had to hold. That belief is true about a specific historical event and it is not true as a law of the universe, and my father would put those in the same sentence and I cannot.

He is right that the work does not guarantee anything. He is right about that and he has watched it prove out. Where I part ways is that he took a thing that is not guaranteed and concluded it was not worth doing, and those are two different conclusions from the same evidence.

You are allowed to be excellent in a place that has hurt people, and skill has never once been naive. Proverbs 22:29 and Ecclesiastes 9:11 sit in the same Bible without canceling each other, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person work well without pretending the world is fair.

Who actually sees it

There is one more thing in the verse and it is the part that made me change how I work.

He shall not stand before mean men. That word means obscure, low, insignificant. So the contrast is not between rich rooms and poor rooms. It is between being in front of people who can do something with what you made and being in front of people who cannot.

That is not about status. That is about the difference between showing your work to somebody who can use it and showing it to somebody who can only nod.

And most people never do the first thing, not because they are not good, but because they never finished anything to a standard they were willing to show.

You have work that could be shown, and the finishing has never once been beyond what He gave you strength for. Proverbs 22:29 puts skill and a different room in the same sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies the last unglamorous hour of getting something finished properly.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody right now.

You are not at the mercy of luck, and the quality of what you make has never once been irrelevant. I am not promising anybody a room. Proverbs 22:29 is an observation and I have said so plainly, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my confidence who makes a person willing to get better at something in a world that offers no guarantees.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Skill is what that power looks like when it has been spent over time. It is not a personality, it is an accumulation, and every hour aimed at improving instead of just finishing adds to it.

And that is the difference between this and the other kind of preaching. Nobody is promising you a king's court. What is on the table is that the thing in your hands can get better, that better is real, and that better was always what He was giving you the power for.

You have hands that can be trained, and He has never once handed anybody a finished ability. Proverbs 22:29 admires a skilled man and not a lucky one, and the Spirit of God is the one who builds that in an ordinary person over unglamorous years.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Belief that only luck opens doors, you are not the truth and I am done building on you. Proverbs 22:29 says a man diligent in his business shall stand before kings, so let go of my hands in the name of Jesus.
  2. Excuse that says it does not matter here, you have no authority over my standard. The word admires a skilled man on purpose, and by the Holy Spirit I am fixing the sloppy part today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and skill is what that power looks like spent over time. Your word says he shall stand before kings, so I do the work well today and I leave the room to You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
