Faith or PresumptionMatthew 7:24

Both Men Heard the Same Words and the Weather Was Fine

This message is for the reader who cannot tell what their life is built on because nothing has tested it yet

Jesus ends the most famous sermon ever preached with two men who did the exact same thing.

Both of them heard His words. He says that twice, once about each. Neither one was ignorant, neither one was outside the room, neither one missed the teaching. And both of them built a house.

So on the day the houses went up, you could not have told them apart. Two structures, two men who had heard the same sermon, standing in the same sunshine.

And then Jesus says one built on a rock and one built on sand, and Luke's version of the story adds the detail that explains everything: the wise one digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock.

Digged deep. That is the whole difference and it is the part nobody could see. It happened before there was anything to look at, in the dirt, on a day when the weather was fine and there was no reason to bother.

And then a storm came to both houses. Same rain, same flood, same wind. He does not give the wise man better weather.

One house stood and one house fell, and the difference had been settled months earlier by a man doing extra work that nobody could verify.

The difference is not hearing

Read what He actually says, because most people remember this parable wrong.

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. (Matthew 7:24, King James Version)

Heareth and doeth them.

The foolish man in the next verses also hears. Jesus is explicit about that. The contrast is not between a person who listened and a person who did not, it is between two people who both listened and only one of whom did anything with it.

That is uncomfortable for anybody who grew up in church, because we have made hearing into the activity. We attend, we take notes, we can quote it back, and all of that is the first half of a sentence that has a second half in it.

You are able to do something with what you already heard, and He has never once required you to hear it again first. That is not me being hard on anybody. Matthew 7:24 puts hearing and doing together as one condition, and it is the Holy Spirit who moves a person from agreement into action without turning it into a performance.

Fine weather proves nothing

Here is the practical problem this parable names, and it is the reason it belongs in this category.

Under normal conditions, presumption and faith look identical.

Both houses stood for a long time. The man on sand was not suffering. He was living in a house, sleeping fine, probably telling people how well the build had gone, and there was nothing in his daily experience to suggest anything was wrong.

The foundation is not visible. That is not a metaphor, that is the actual construction fact the parable turns on, and it means nobody can see what they are standing on until something puts weight on it.

So a long stretch of things going fine is not evidence about a foundation. It is only evidence that no weather has come.

You have no information about what you are standing on until something leans on it, and comfort has never once been a test. Luke 6:48 says he digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock, and the Spirit of God is the one who shows a person what is actually under them before circumstances do.

Digging deep is unglamorous and unverifiable

I want to sit on the phrase Luke adds, because it is the whole instruction.

He digged deep. That is hours of work in the ground that produced nothing anybody could photograph. No walls went up that day. Anybody watching would have seen a man in a hole while his neighbor was already framing.

And there was no way to prove he was right. Not until the storm.

That is the hardest kind of work to keep doing, and it is exactly the kind that this passage says makes all the difference: the work you do on a thing nobody will ever inspect, on a day when the shortcut is available and nothing bad has happened to anybody who took it.

You are doing work that nobody can verify, and it has never once been wasted because nobody saw it. Luke 6:48 keeps the digging in the record even though nobody in the story witnessed it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who sustains a person through the invisible part of anything.

The storm is not a punishment

I have to say this clearly, because this parable gets preached badly.

The storm comes to both houses. Jesus is not describing a world where obedient people get good weather. The rain descended, the floods came, the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it is the same sentence for the man on the rock.

So when hard things come, that is not information about somebody's foundation. Everybody gets weather.

What the parable claims is much narrower and much more useful: what a person did with what they heard determines what happens to them in the weather, not whether they get any.

You are not being judged by the storm you are in, and hard weather has never once been a verdict on anybody's obedience. Matthew 7:25 sends the same storm to both houses, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a person up inside weather rather than around it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not in trouble, and this has never once been about scaring anybody into checking. I am not writing a warning. Matthew 7:24 is the closing image of a sermon about a good life, and it is the Holy Spirit and not fear who moves a person to go and look at what is under them.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. The digging is exactly that verse in the dirt. He supplies the strength, and a person spends it on work that nobody applauds, on a day when the shortcut is right there and nothing has gone wrong yet.

That is what this whole site keeps landing on. The power is real, and it gets spent in unglamorous places, and the results show up much later in weather nobody scheduled.

You have hours available for the part nobody sees, and He has never once undervalued that work. Luke 6:48 remembers a man digging that nobody watched, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary invisible hour worth putting in.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Assumption that this will hold, you are not knowledge and I am going to check. Matthew 7:24 says heareth and doeth them, so you do not get to stand in for obedience in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shortcut that says nobody will ever know, you have no place in my footing. The word says he digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock, and by the Holy Spirit I am putting real weight on this and finding out what it is built on.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and I am spending it in the ground today. Your word sends the same storm to both houses, so I build on what You said and I leave the weather to You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
