They Walked In Backward With a Blanket

This message is for the reader who has seen a parent's failure up close and does not know what to do with knowing it

Right after the flood, the man who had built the ark planted a vineyard, and then he got drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent.

That is in the Bible about eight verses after the most famous rescue in the Old Testament. The man Scripture calls just and perfect in his generations, the one whose obedience saved everything alive, is on the floor of his own tent with nothing on and no idea anybody can see him.

One of his sons walked in and saw him, and went out and told his two brothers.

The other two took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward into that tent, and covered their father, and the text says their faces were backward and they saw not their father's nakedness.

Backward. They had to go in. Somebody had to. And they arranged it so that going in did not mean looking.

I do not know a better picture in Scripture of what a grown child does with a parent's failure.

The problem was not seeing it

Read what happened, because the difference between the sons is not what they knew.

And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. (Genesis 9:23, King James Version)

Their faces were backward.

All three of those men knew. Ham saw it firsthand and the other two knew because he told them, and they were walking into the tent fully aware of what was on the floor.

So this is not a story about pretending. Nobody in it is under any illusion. The whole rescue is carried out by two men who have complete information.

What separates them is what they did with the knowing. One published it. Two covered it, and arranged their own bodies so that they would not have to take in more than they already had.

You are not guilty for knowing, and seeing something has never once been the sin in that account. That is not me softening a hard passage. Genesis 9:23 has two men act with full knowledge, and it is the Holy Spirit who shows a person what to do with information they never asked for.

Telling it is a decision

Here is what I want somebody to catch, because it is the part that is actually in front of a reader today.

Ham told. That is a verb. It was an action he took, and there was a gap between seeing and telling where a decision happened.

And there is almost always a reason available for telling. It is true, for one. It might be that somebody should know, and sometimes somebody genuinely should. There are things a parent has done that have to be said out loud to somebody, and I am not writing a message that tells anybody to bury a real harm.

But most of the time the urge to tell is not about protection. It is about relief, or about being believed, or about not being the only one who has to carry it.

Those are honest human needs. They are just not the same as necessity, and mixing the two up is how family things get spread across a room and never get repaired.

You are able to tell somebody who can actually help, and that has never once been the same as telling everybody. Genesis 9:22 records the telling as an act and not an accident, and the Spirit of God is the one who shows a person the difference between what needs saying and what needs relief.

Covering is not the same as hiding

I have to guard this hard, because a passage about covering a father can be misused badly.

Covering is not concealing abuse. It is not protecting somebody who is hurting people. If a person is in danger, that gets said out loud, to somebody who can act, immediately, and nothing in Genesis 9 argues otherwise. Noah was not a threat to anybody on that floor. He was a man who had humiliated himself, alone, in his own tent.

That distinction matters enormously and I will not blur it. There is a difference between a father's shame and a father's harm.

Shame gets covered. Harm gets addressed, and the addressing is itself a form of honor, because a person you consider weighty is somebody you take seriously enough to stop.

You are able to tell the difference, and God has never once asked anybody to cover something that is still hurting people. Ephesians 5:11 says have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather reprove them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person clarity about which of the two is in front of them.

They walked in

The last thing about those two brothers, and it is the thing I keep coming back to.

They went in. Covering was not the same as leaving him there. They did not stand outside and refuse to look and call that respect. Somebody had to enter that tent and put a blanket on a man, and they did it.

That is active. It costs something to walk into a room like that, and it costs more to walk in backward, because backward is slower and clumsier and you have to feel your way.

Honor in a hard family is almost always that: entering the room, awkwardly, in a way that protects somebody's dignity, when it would be easier either to broadcast it or to walk away.

You are able to go in and cover it, and staying away has never once been the same as honoring somebody. Genesis 9:23 has two men enter the tent rather than avoid it, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies the willingness to do something awkward and kind.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not carrying this alone, and it has never once been something you had to hold with no help. I am not telling anybody to be silent. Genesis 9:23 has two men act with full information, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my caution who shows somebody the difference between wisdom and secrecy in their own family.

And I will say the honest thing about my own house, because I always do. I know things about the man who raised me. Every grown child does. I write about his teaching because his teaching is public and it shaped a lot of people, and I do not write about him, and there is a difference between those two and I try to keep it.

He is heavy to me. He will be heavy to me after this is all over.

You have a garment and two shoulders, and He has never once asked you to leave somebody uncovered. Genesis 9:23 says their faces were backward, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an awkward act of protection possible for somebody who has every reason to be angry.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Urge to tell it, you are not truth telling and I know what you are. Genesis 9:23 says their faces were backward, so you do not run my mouth in the name of Jesus.
  2. Weight of knowing this alone, you have no right to crush me. The word has two men carry a garment on both their shoulders together, and by the Holy Spirit I am telling God all of it today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and some of that power is the strength to cover somebody. Your word says they saw not their father's nakedness, so I take this into Your presence and I leave it there.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
