DiligenceProverbs 13:4

The Sluggard Desireth and That Is the Whole Tragedy

This message is for the reader whose wanting has never once become a time on a calendar

Everybody thinks the lazy man in Proverbs is a man who does not want anything.

He is not. That is what surprised me the first time I read the sentence slowly, and it is what makes the whole proverb useful instead of insulting.

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing.

He desires. He has appetite. He has plans in his head and probably very good ones, and he can talk about them well. Solomon's problem with him is not that his heart is empty. It is that his hands never caught up with his heart, and the distance between those two is where his whole life went.

That is a much sadder picture than a man on a couch with no dreams. That is a man with real desire and nothing to show for it, and if you have ever been that person you know that it does not feel like laziness from the inside. It feels like waiting for the right time.

And the right time keeps not arriving, because a right time is not a thing that arrives. It is a thing somebody schedules.

Both halves of the verse have desire in them

Read the whole line, because the contrast is not what people assume.

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. (Proverbs 13:4, King James Version)

The soul of the sluggard desireth. The soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Both of them have souls with something going on. The difference is not appetite and there is nothing in that verse about one man wanting more than the other. Solomon is contrasting what happened to the wanting, not the size of it.

That is enormously freeing, because most people carrying this problem have been told their whole lives that they need to want it more. They do not. They have plenty of wanting. Wanting was never the missing ingredient.

You are not short on desire, and God has never once measured a person by how badly they wanted something. That is not me letting anybody off. Proverbs 13:4 gives both men a soul that desires, and it is the Holy Spirit who moves a person from an appetite into an action without shaming the appetite.

The right time is a scheduling decision

Here is the mechanism, and it is unglamorous.

A wanting with no time attached to it is not a plan. It is a mood. And moods are real and they matter and they cannot be executed, because execution requires a slot.

Every single thing that has ever gotten done in anybody's life had a time on it. Somebody sat down at a specific hour on a specific day and did it, and if they did not, it did not happen, and no amount of caring changed that.

So the practical difference between a person who has it and a person who wants it is often not character at all. It is that one of them put it on a calendar and one of them kept it in their chest.

You have the ability to name an hour, and that has never once required you to feel ready first. Proverbs 13:4 puts the difference in what got done rather than in what got felt, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies the will and the doing, which is what Philippians 2:13 says outright.

Nobody is lazy about everything

I want to say something in defense of the person this verse describes, because I have been him.

Nobody is a sluggard across the board. The same man who cannot start the thing he says he wants most will spend six unbroken hours on something nobody asked him to do. The energy is not missing. It is going somewhere.

So the real question is never why am I lazy. It is what is my energy actually going to, and what is it about the wanted thing that makes it different.

Usually it is one of two things: the wanted thing has no first step small enough to start, or the wanted thing carries a risk of finding out somebody is not good at it, and the second one is by far the more common.

I sat on the thing I wanted most for two years, and I was not idle in those two years. I worked. I was busy. I just would not go near the one thing, because going near it meant finding out.

You are not lazy, and the energy you need has never once been absent from you. Proverbs 13:4 describes a result rather than diagnosing a character, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person the actual reason underneath a stall.

Made fat is not a promise about money

I have to handle the second half of this verse carefully, because it is easy to misread on a site about provision.

The soul of the diligent shall be made fat. That is an old expression for being satisfied, well nourished, full. It is a picture of a life that is not gnawing at itself.

And I am not going to turn it into a promise about income, because the verse does not say that and I am not going to say what Scripture does not say. It is a proverb, which is a description of how things generally go, and Proverbs itself is full of exceptions and Job is a whole book of one.

What it does describe is a difference in the interior of a person. The one who acts on what they want is nourished by it in a way that the one who only wants it is not, and that is true long before anything visible changes.

You are fed by the doing itself, and that has never once been contingent on the outcome. Proverbs 13:4 describes a satisfied soul rather than a full account, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a person real satisfaction inside an unfinished thing.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody right now.

You are not the problem, and the wanting in your chest has never once been the thing that failed. I am not softening a hard proverb. Proverbs 13:4 is blunt about the outcome and I have not hidden that, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a motivational push who takes an old sentence and makes it move a person instead of shame them.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Notice again what that verb does not say. It does not say He gives the thing, and it does not say He gives the mood. He gives power, which is a capacity, and a capacity gets spent at a specific hour by a specific person or it does not get spent at all.

So the whole distance between the two souls in that verse is an appointment. That is it. That is the entire gap, and it is smaller than anybody's shame about it.

You have an hour available to you, and it has never once been out of reach. Proverbs 13:4 puts the difference in what got done, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary scheduled hour into obedience.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Wanting with no hour on it, you are not a plan and I am giving you a time. Proverbs 13:4 says the soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing, so you get a day and an hour in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of finding out I am bad at it, you have no say in my Tuesday. The word says the soul of the diligent shall be made fat, and by the Holy Spirit I am starting this badly on the hour I named.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You have never once given me a mood instead. Your word puts the difference in what got done, so I take the hour I named and I spend it in front of You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
