The Ant Has No Overseer and Still Shows Up

A king with more money than anybody in the world stopped in the middle of writing and pointed at a bug.

Not an eagle. Not a lion. Not a war horse, and he had those. He pointed at an ant on the ground and told his son to go look at it and think about what he saw.

And when he says what to notice, he does not say the ant is strong, because it is not. He does not say the ant is fast. He says one thing about that ant that is the whole reason it made it into the Bible.

Nobody is standing over it.

No guide. No overseer. No ruler. Nobody assigns it, nobody checks on it, nobody writes it up, and nobody claps when it is done. And it still goes out in the summer and brings food in, because the winter is coming and the ant is not waiting to be told about the winter.

That is the whole lesson. A king looked at his kid and said: be like that.

The detail he chose to point at

Here is the verse, and the three missing job titles are the point of it.

Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. (Proverbs 6:7-8, King James Version)

Three words for the same idea, stacked one after another. Nobody in front of it, nobody over it, nobody above it.

That is a very specific thing to admire. Solomon is not praising effort in general. He is praising effort that starts on the inside, where nothing external is pushing, and he is doing it on purpose because he knows something about people.

Most of us can work hard. What most of us cannot do is start.

You are able to begin without being pushed, and that ability was put in you and not earned by you. That is not a motivational claim about human nature. Proverbs 6 holds up self starting as something to go and learn, and it is the Holy Spirit who supplies the willing and the doing in a person, which is what Philippians 2 says outright.

Driven and self starting are not the same thing

I want to separate two things that look identical from the outside.

There is a person who works very hard, all the time, and is never at rest, and every bit of it is fear. Fear of falling behind. Fear of a bill. Fear of what people would say. That person looks like the ant and is nothing like it, because the whole machine is being run from outside by something chasing them.

Then there is a person who does one steady hour on a thing nobody knows about, and goes to bed.

The second one is what that verse is describing, and it is quieter and it is far rarer.

I grew up around the first kind and the opposite kind both. My mother is the reason the lights stayed on in our house, and she was up before everybody and down after everybody, and a lot of that was love and some of it was pure fear, and she would tell you the same. And in the same house there was a settled belief that going after a thing showed a lack of trust.

So I got both messages at once. Work yourself into the ground when the crisis hits. Do nothing at all when it does not.

You have a pattern in you that somebody else installed, and God has never once been the author of it. Read what Proverbs 6 actually recommends and notice there is no panic anywhere in it, and let the Holy Spirit start to loosen a rhythm a person absorbed before they were old enough to question it.

The summer is the point

Look at the timing in that verse, because it is the part I missed for years.

She provides her meat in the summer. She gathers in the harvest. Not in the winter. In the summer, when nothing is wrong, when there is no emergency, when there is no reason at all to be carrying anything anywhere.

That is the hard part. Anybody will work in the winter. The winter makes you. The whole test of that little animal is what it does on a good day when nothing is forcing it.

And that is exactly the hour most people never spend. Not because they are lazy. Because there is no pressure on it, and unpressured hours evaporate.

You have a summer right now, and it is not going to announce itself as one. Proverbs 6:8 puts the gathering in the good season on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person able to see an ordinary week as the season it actually is.

What God does and what the ant does

I have to put the two halves together here, because a message about self starting can turn into a message about self reliance, and those are different religions.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get wealth. The power is His. He supplies it. He is the source of the strength in the arms and the clarity in the head and the ability to keep a habit for a month.

And the ant still has to go out.

Both. Not one. He gives the power, and the power gets spent by a creature walking out in the sun with nobody watching. That is the whole shape of it, and it is why this site says the same sentence over and over: He gives the power to get, and getting is a verb that somebody does.

You have been given something to spend, and it is not going to be spent for you. That is what the verb in Deuteronomy 8:18 means, plainly, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a person from agreeing with a sentence like that to standing up out of a chair.
